Sealing and weatherproofing your deck
Sealing and weatherproofing your deck isn’t hard. It just takes the right supplies and a lot of elbow grease. It’s worth it though, because with the right weatherproofing your deck will last to give you years of relaxation and enjoyment.
You should seal your deck right after it’s built and then every other year or so to ensure that the wood holds up. You’ll need waterproofing staining sealer, deck cleaner, broom, sandpaper or a belt sander, paintbrush, hose, dust mask, a pail of water and safety glasses. If you want to save time, consider renting a paint sprayer instead of using a paintbrush.
First make sure the deck is clean and free of any sawdust, dirt, and rough patches. Sweep up the debris and sand down any roughness. Make sure you pay attention to the cracks, crevices and corners of your new deck. Let the deck dry thoroughly before continuing with your project and make sure there is no rain in the forecast!
Follow the manufacturer’s directions on the weatherproof sealant you have purchased. Make sure you cover the entire deck, including railings, beams, wall supports, and every crack and corner. Whether you’re using a paint sprayer or a paintbrush, this is a vital part of weatherproofing and sealing your new deck.
Now be patient! You’ll want to start enjoying your new deck as soon as possible, but wait for the sealant to dry properly. Refer to the manufacturer’s directions for adequate drying time.
