Tips on how to save on Winter Home Heating Bills

Look up or look out - inspecting your roof
First of all, check for discolored paint or peeling wallpaper inside your home. This could be a sign of excess moisture or a leaking roof!

Look for loose, warped or worn roofing material. Are the shingles curling up or down? This could be signs of potential leaks!

Check your roof
It’s very messy to clean a chimney, but it ought to be done regularly to remove built-up creosote and soot, which can catch fire or obstruct the air flowing through your chimney. Restricted airflow can cause your fireplace to operate poorly and sometimes cause soot and ash to blow back into your house. Have a professional chimney sweep inspect and clean your chimney flue and cap for leaks or cracks. Professionals can get the job done usually in just a couple of hours because they have the right tools. Doing it yourself is time consuming at best, dangerous at worst!

plan to clean your gutters at least twice a year—more often if the roof is directly beneath trees. But do this only if you know you can work safely from a ladder or the roof. If your house has more than a single story, you’re better off hiring a professional.

Attic Outlook
Take a look around your attic and get rid of birds nests and any obstructions over your vents.  Keeping a good airflow helps keep your cooling costs down!

Keep Your Cool
Take time to replace your filters and clean the air purifiers on your heating and cooling systems. Call a professional to check for duct obstructions and toxins. This is a great time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors too!

Concrete Reason to Inspect & Seal
Spring is an ideal time to seal and inspect your asphalt or concrete driveways, and power wash your patio.  You might as well double-check your deck for rotting wood or loose railings too.

Sunblock For Your House
Do you have windows that face south and west?  Consider adding blinds or sun-blocking draperies to these windows.  It will save you money on your utility bills.  If your thermostat takes a direct hit from the sun, use a tinted cover-box to reduce the sun’s effect on your air conditioning bill.
